Making new crayons

We've been saving our old beater crayons in a bag since a year or two in anticipation of making these new crayons. It sure takes lots of old crayons to make a few new ones :)

We had to peel the paper off them. Crayola does a REALLY great job of making sure the paper sticks to the crayons. The boys had the potato peeler out until I realized what they were up to. Little crayon shavings + butcher block counter= mess.

Tip: If you ever plan on doing this craft, do not try to get one step ahead and peel the crayons as you save them. You will end up with yucky spotted crayons like the bare yellow one in the above photo.

We snapped them into small pieces and put them into muffin tins.

David had the idea of sticking one red crayon piece into the yellows to create a flame effect.

We baked them at 175 for a 20 minutes and then put them in the fridge to harden.
