"I'm not smiling for you anymore Mom!"
Landon has been learning to read in kindergarten and it always amazes me how quickly the children's skills snowball once they start to read. He was learning his memory verse for Sunday School- "The Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world" 1 John 4;14. The Sunday school teacher has printed it out on an 8.5 x11 sheet of paper, which we tape to the cabinet beside the fridge. This is practically the only way anyone is going to remember that we need to learn the verse.
So I began by reading it to him and was surprised when he chimed in with the sight words "the, to, be and of", he knew them and I double checked to see if he really did- so that was fun to see. Then I had him try to say the verse again and when he did, it went like this "The Father sent the only forgotten son...." and I stepped in to correct him and he started again saying it correctly. He also says it is found in John 3:16! So I showed him on the sheet where it said 1 John 4:14 and he again tried to recognize it by sight and thought the word John was "Jenny" from his class at school. He did end up learning the verse but what a cute exercise it was to teach it to him.
I have found a couple of great aids for learning verses myself . There is a website which converts your verse into a format of "first letter of each word" and it helps you as a guide without revealing the actual verse. If that made no sense, try it here: http://www.downes.ca/memorization.htm Enter your verse into the first box and see the "code" appear in the second box. You can print this off and tuck it in your pocket.
Also, a great ministry message on why it is important to memorize verses is found here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2ph6zKxJDkIt's John Piper and you won't regret the 3:52 you spend watching it. Go for it. Then click on one of the other videos that shows John Piper reciting Scripture- it's like music. Anyway- rabbit trails! Didn't really mean to get into that but hopefully there is some purpose to it lol!
Back to Landon-
This morning I set the timer for my boiled eggs then sat down at the computer in the living room to delete emails. Landon was sitting at the table eating cereal.
The timer rings.
I select 10 emails to delete.
Landon says "Mom, your timer is ringing".
I hit the delete button on the emails.
Landon says "Mom, it burned. Too late." (it had been 3 seconds, after all)
As I am walking to the oven to turn off the timer he asks "is it the cake from last night- because that would be bad." Yes it would! Best carrot cake recipe ever! Truth is, I did not let on that I had made eggs because he always wants my eggs
He keeps us laughing-that is for sure.
LMAP: Landon Meal Avoidance Procedures-
If he doesn't want to eat some part of his meal he will say "just the egg part of my stomach is empty" or "just the water part is empty."
I do not think he understood the concept of Halloween in that it is once a year, because he just finished his Halloween loot now and told me that we need to go trick or treating again because he is out of candy.
